Head to South Africa’s East Coast between May and June, and you could bear witness to one of the world’s most unique and greatest ever spectacles. The Sardine Run.

The Sardines – or the South African Pilchards to be more precise, head up the eastern coast within their shoal for their migration, or in simple terms, their annual run. The marine wildlife takes heed and gathers for a tempting feast. But these fish have both gills and guts, swimming in close-knit packs, minimising their chance of being devoured by predators.

In the last 25 years, there have been four occasions where the annual run mysteriously hasn’t taken place, making us question why on earth the migration happens in the first place.

But that’s all part of the excitement and anticipation of this annual natural occurring event. There’s nothing like a good mystery.
